Mixes – On The One
I’ve been using Mixcloud to listen to music more often on my phone, so I’ve been trying to upload more mixes there.
Someone in a group I’m in proclaimed themselves a newbie to funk music, and asked for recommendations. I used that as an excuse to make a chronological series of mixes of funk music.
One The One: 1965-1969
Some of the lines of where funk began are pretty blurry, and after contemplating several starting points like James Brown’s Think, Syl Johnson, Rufus Thomas, and Jr. Walker, I wound up starting at the same place most people credit as the first funk song, 1965’s Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag.
While I think it’s probable that I’ll end up with a disc for each year after this one, I decided to group the 60’s into one mix. As a result I tried hard to eliminate all but the most funky songs, eliminating some favorites like Underdog and Everyday People, which I like more than the included Sing A Simple Song.

On The One: 1970
Unfortunately, I made a terrible error on the first volume of On The One. Sly & The Family Stone‘s Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) was released in December of 1969 as a non-album single. Instead of re-doing the last volume (and choosing a song to get rid of, I’ve decided to include it as the first song on the 1970 mix. I feel pretty good about this, especially since it didn’t enter the Billboard charts until January 3rd, 1970 (which it eventually topped five weeks later).
